Deepen your skills in e-learning instructional design.

This two-day program demonstrates the techniques vital to creating successful e-learning programs and will provide participants with skills to use advanced design techniques to create e-learning programs that drive productivity. Participants will learn effective ways to design learning events that go far beyond the transmission of information to achieve behavior change and targeted performance levels.

Audience
This workshop is appropriate for a multitude of professional backgrounds, but is primarily designed for those who are experienced in training and performance who want to deepen their skills in e-learning instructional design: managers, developers, designers, instructors, and courseware producers.

Course Description
In some ways, instructional design missed the boat. Powerful authoring tools coupled with the Internet and low cost, media-capable computers and mobile devices expanded the sea of instructional possibilities dramatically and did so almost in an instant. Experienced instructional designers now find guidance lacking in classical literature and design principles, while inexperienced designers are drowning in alluring capabilities.

Advanced E-Learning Instructional Design applies the science of behavior change while redirecting and narrowing the focus of instructional design to those things that matter most in creating successful e-learning applications. Participants will find not only effective ways to design meaningful, memorable, and motivational experiences, but also a blending of successful behavioral change principles. Based on dozens of research studies, these principles will help you design learning events that go far beyond the transmission of information to achieve behavioral change and targeted performance levels.

The content of the workshop is based on the second book in Michael Allen’s E-Learning Library--Designing Successful E-Learning: Forget What You Know About Instructional Design and Do Something Interesting.

Blended Learning Certificate Program

Go beyond traditional classroom learning.

Today's learning professionals are under pressure to address ever-evolving skills needed in their organizations, and they are being asked to do so with limited resources and time. This new program provides the roadmap for creating high-impact solutions that address these needs by combining various learning platforms, methods, and formats to motivate learners, produce real results, and increase productivity. After this workshop, participants will be able to take immediate steps to design blended learning solutions using the tools and action plan provided.

Audience
This program is ideal for learning professionals who design and/or deliver training and want to adopt blended learning approaches.

Format
This unique ASTD program uses a blended learning approach to model the concepts taught in the workshop. Participants will be asked to complete a pre-work assignment which helps gather the information needed to work on their own curriculum during the workshop.

The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on day one. Day two begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until approximately 2:00 p.m. Participants will then be asked to participate in a four-hour instructor-led online session several days later.

Learning Objectives
After the workshop, participants will be able to:

Define blended learning and apply practical tips, tools, and techniques for designing effective blended learning solutions.
List the various formats and media that can be 'mixed' for an optimal blended learning approach.
Align learning objectives with the most appropriate instructional method and format (i.e. decide when to use a blended approach and when not to).
Design a complete blended learning program using the exclusive ASTD Blended Instructional Design Process provided in the workshop.
Determine the resources, expertise, technology, and budget required to implement high-quality blended solutions.
Identify performance support methods and tools that support the blend, on the job.
Make the business case for increased use of blended learning in their organization.

If you have ever received an award or recognition, you most likely remember the emotions that were generated—happiness, gratitude, and accomplishment. The recognition gave you an energy boost to propel you into your next big endeavor. On the flip side of this coin, have you ever had the opportunity to give someone an award or recognize them for a job well done? My guess is that you probably had similar emotions as if you were receiving an award—happiness and a sense of gratification that you were making someone else happy.

Volunteer opportunities include being a Session Monitor and an Ask Me Volunteer. Session Monitors are assigned a meeting room and assist the speaker by passing out handouts and session evaluation forms, taking a head count at the beginning and in the middle of the session, and collecting the evaluation forms at the end of the session. Ask Me Volunteers are stationed throughout the convention center and do a host of duties such as answer questions, give directions, help people find meeting rooms, bathrooms, etc. To learn more and to register as a volunteer, go to www.astd.org/volunteers.

ASTD Hosts 4 Habits of Powerful and Passionate Professionals Workshop

ASTD Nebraska held a luncheon and workshop on February 10^th entitled “4 Habits of Powerful and Passionate Professionals” at the Scott Conference Center in Omaha. The luncheon and workshop featured Jim “Mr. Energy” Smith, Jr., who discussed myriad ways for today’s professionals and leaders to shift their mindsets and view these times as opportunities for brilliance, reinvention, and personal/professional growth. During his presentation, Jim challenged attendees to “get out of your own way” and talked about finding your joy, not just a job; and your passion, not just a paycheck.

Prior to forming JIMPACT Enterprises in 2000, Jim Smith, Jr., worked in corporate leadership positions for over 16 years in various companies including the Bob Pike Group, Simmons Associates, CoreStates Bank, the Vanguard Group of Investments and Prudential’s American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Operations. Jim also presently serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Rutgers University Executive MBA Program. Jim passionately works with both national and international groups of all sizes, providing solutions and breakthroughs for superior results in areas of leadership, professional trainer development, presentation and facilitation skills, diversity and empowerment. His enthusiastic, passionate, and unique style of speaking has earned him the distinction of “Mr. Energy!”

The Art of Followership

From childhood in our culture, we are taught to "obey." We are told to obey our parents, our teachers, our coaches, our religious leaders, ranks in the military, our bosses at work, etc. There are many reasons why we follow, including blind obedience, fear, faith, or agreement. Often, however, the missing element is the art of followership.

To be a good leader, one must be a good follower because everyone follows in some aspect of his or her life. Whether to lead or follow depends on the circumstances, but each of us in the role of a leader and follower is responsible for our own actions and the actions of those we influence.

Followers and leaders revolve around a common purpose. Followers are not subordinate to leaders, nor are they responsible to the leaders. Followers are responsible to the common purpose. Think of organizations as a triangle: the leader and follower are at the base of the triangle and perform functions which guide them toward a common purpose at the top.

Again, followers have a responsibility to the common purpose. Followers must have determination. They must practice self-forgiveness when mistakes are made. Followers must have the courage to stand up to leaders for what they believe, regarding the purpose.

If a follower has the fear of being fired, placated, or patronized, the follower is not likely to disclose these fears to the leader. Typically, a follower will not say, "I think the direction we are headed isn't going to be as effective as this one, and here's why." Therefore, leaders have to create a culture that allows the practice of good followership. And this is in addition to being good followers as well. Think of the power that followers have; without followers, there are no leaders.

In an article for the journal "Concepts for Air Force Leadership," Col. Philip S. Meilinger of the U.S. Air Force relayed the 10 rules of good followership:

Don't blame your boss for an unpopular decision or policy. Your job is to support, not undermine whether you like the idea or not.
Argue with your boss if necessary, but do it in private. Never disclose to others the conversation details.
Use your initiative and empowerment. Make the decision and then run it past the boss.
Accept responsibility whenever it is offered.
Tell the truth. Your boss will be giving advice up the chain of command based on what you said.
Do your homework and research. Offer your boss all needed information to make a decision and anticipate possible questions.
When making a recommendation, remember all stakeholders who will have to implement it. This means you must know your own limitations and weaknesses as well as your strengths.
Keep your boss informed of what's going on in the department. Transparency is key.
If you see a problem, fix it. Don't worry about who would have gotten the blame or who now gets the praise. General George Marshall, Army Chief of Staff during WW II, commented that there was no limit to the amount of good that people could accomplish, as long as they didn't care who received the credit.
Regarding work-life balance, give 150% to your job every day, but don't ever forget the needs of your family. If they are unhappy, you will be too, and your job performance will suffer accordingly.
